Xanax tablets and other benzodiazepines are often used in pets such as cats and dogs on an as-needed basis for treating various types of anxiety symptoms, phobias, and anxiety attacks. This drug is also given to cats with soiling or urine-marking behaviors. Some vets may also recommend Xanax or other benzodiazepines to calm the aggressive behaviors of dogs, though this medicine is controversial.

Cats and dogs are only rarely put on prolonged therapy of Xanax. In many cases, the medicine is given before an anxiety-triggering event, such as a thunderstorm, or when the pets are experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. The vet will determine each dose by the weight of the animal. For dogs, the amount can range from 0.001 mg to 0.4 mg per kg of body weight, depending on the anxiety symptoms being treated. The recommended for cats are between 0.05 to 0.25 mg/kg.

Always consult the vet professional before giving any medicine to calm your pet. Xanax, on the other hand, is generally formulated for humans and so should not be given to a pet. If necessary, a vet will prescribe this medicine in a formulation that is safe for your pets that can be administered at a suitable dose strength.
